it's not fair how i romanticize people without their permission. i feel like there should be a copyright on one's identity and i should pay a fee to interpret things the way i do.

assalam alaykum -
i met with one of my professional mentors yesterday, and he shared with me his thoughts about how every individual has a mask they wear - a personnna (he was referring to the greek origins of the word, when actors would put on a mask). his point was that this mask allows us as human beings/as muslims to remain in check - and the challenge is it to ensure that it doesn't fall from our hands; that internally, we are not solid human beings, we have animal instincts.
in relation to what you just said - even if we had copyrights over our own personnas, our own persons, i think even we would not know how to interpret our own selves: b/c we're always facing our own jihad-un-nafs always, figthing what is deeply embedded in us, and fighting to come out strong and solid persons (think surah al-'asr), fighting to maintain a personna of who we want to be versus who we are inside.
thanks for sharing your thoughts, as always - jazaki'Allahu khair.
love,
s.
